Dear Master / I am ill

For voice and piano (2012). Duration: ca. 4 min.

For soprano voice and piano [4 min]. Written for the Tufts Composers Emily Dickinson Project. Premiered by Sarah Pelletier (voice) and Lois Shapiro (piano) at the Distler Performance Hall, Tufts University, on March 7, 2012. Program Note: The section of text used in this song is from the first of Emily Dickinson's three Master Letters. In these letters, Dickinson wrote to a man to whom she referred only as, "Master." There is no evidence that these letters were ever mailed, and they were only discovered after her death. Text: Dear Master I am ill - but grieving more that you are ill, I make my stronger hand work long eno' to tell you - I thought perhaps you were in Heaven, and when you spoke again, it seemed quite sweet, and wonderful, and surprised me so - I wish that you were well. - Emily Dickinson
